It's been almost a month since I completed Tech Edit Hub's Learn to Tech Edit Knitting course. I'm still feeling around this part of the knitting ecosystem. I participated in a round table on the Tech Editor Hub. The Hub allows us to network with other tech editors, and learned that there's a wider world out there beyond my own experiences. On the Round Table, my concern was how do I get clients. And got wonderful tips from the participants. Besides that, I was advised not to despair as this time (before I get any work) can be quite valuable to set up my website and social media, and work out my system.
Schedule
I have worked out a schedule (sort of). This will help me get off my butt and feel like I'm doing something to move forward.
Once a week, I will add a post on Instagram (@mysunsetwayknit). This post will be anything to do with knitting in my life. E.g. learned a new stitch, started a new project, bought some yarn, got a new job!!
Once a month, I will add a blog post here to document my tech editing journey.
Once a week, as long as I don't have a job, I will pull out a pattern from my collection and have it tech edited as if it were a real job. Maybe I'll find something there and make a connection with the designer. This will improve my experience and refine my system.
Pay-What-You-Want
The last few days, I have been thinking of a better way to charge my clients. Experienced tech editors charge by the hour, while early in their careers, flat rate is usually applied.
The idea of pay-what-you-want came to my mind this week. Took me a while to find out what it was called. I've updated my website to reflect this charging model in my Services. I'm not sure how it will work out. I just hope the knitting community is fair. Will put it out on the FB Tech Editor Hub group next month, after we come back from France.
That's all for now.
